The purpose of meditation is to make our mind calm and peaceful. If our mind is peaceful, we will be free from worries and mental discomfort and so we will experience true happiness and relaxation. But if our mind is stressed and anxious we will find it very difficult to be happy and relaxed even if we are living in the very best conditions.

So much of the stress and anxiety we normally experience comes from our mind, and many of the problems we experience, including ill health, are caused or aggravated by stress and anxiety.

If we understand the causes of an unpeaceful mind and control our mind in meditation, gradually our stress and anxiety will reduce and we shall experience a purer form of happiness. We will experience a calm, spacious feeling in the mind, and many of our usual problems will fall away.

Difficult situations will become easier to deal with, we will naturally feel warm and well disposed towards other people, and our relationships with others will gradually improve.

Lizzie Kelly

LIZZIE is an experienced practitioner and teacher who is well known for her contagious enthusiasm for the Dharma. She speaks from the heart and gives thoughtful, helpful and down-to-earth teachings that are based on her own experiences, both at home (in a long-term relationship) and at work (at the Auckland University of Technology). Lizzie teaches special courses and workshops and substitute teaches Foundation Programme (FP) classes on Monday evenings.
